Why Do We Need "Stop on Red" Week?

The first full week in August is designated as "Stop on Red" Week. Many drivers believe that stopping at red lights and stop signs is self-evident and that they don't need to be reminded, but we've observed that this is not the case.

Why Do People Disobey Stop Signs and Red Lights?

There are a variety of reasons why drivers disregard red lights and stop signs, but in the many years of experienced of the personal injury attorneys, they noticed that the following are among the most common:

  • The motorist was going too fast. When drivers accelerate, particularly when attempting to beat a yellow light, they may not have enough time to come to a complete stop before crossing the junction or colliding with another vehicle already stopped at the signal.
  • The motorist purposefully disregarded the traffic light. It has been seen that irresponsible drivers justifying causing collisions that wounded the clients by claiming they were "in a rush" far too many times. However, personal convenience should not take precedence over the law or the safety of others, which is what those traffic regulations were designed to safeguard.
  • The driver was preoccupied. Drivers who are preoccupied with their phones, adjusting their GPSs or radios, eating, conversing with passengers, or reaching into their rear seats may not realize when they are approaching stop signs or the red lights sign. This, however, is not an acceptable justification. A driver's attention should be completely concentrated on the task of driving while behind the wheel.
  • The motorist was either inebriated or exhausted. Many undesirable side effects of drugs, alcohol, and sleep deprivation might cause drivers to run red lights. They can, for example, impair a driver's vision, making it more difficult for them to see the traffic signal; slow their reactions, making it difficult for them to stop in time; impair a driver's judgment, making it difficult for them to remember how dangerous running the red light will be; or even affect the ability of the driver to remember what the traffic signals would mean.
  • The traffic light was partially concealed. If their vision is impeded by a massive vehicle ahead of them, a driver may be unable to identify what color a traffic signal is. Meanwhile, if a stop sign is obscured by greenery, a vehicle may be unable to see it and may even be unaware that it exists. Only in this case may a driver who ran a red light or stopped at a stop sign be excused from responsibility. They might still be held responsible if they were familiar with the intersection and knew or should have known there was a stop sign, for example.

Red-light-running accident victims are entitled to compensation.

Stop signs and traffic lights are placed expressly to prevent collisions, and irresponsible drivers who refuse to heed them are violating their duty of care to persons in their immediate vicinity, whether other vehicles, bicycles, or pedestrians.

If you or a loved one was harmed as a result of a driver who ran a red light or failed to stop at a stop sign, you may be entitled to compensation. You don't deserve to be held responsible for injuries that were not your fault. There are vehicle accident lawyers that are very much eager to assist you in recovering compensation for your medical bills and pain and suffering.
